Season 3 Digivolution: Tutorial by VelkynKarma Season 3 Digivolution: Tutorial by VelkynKarma
:iconthedigitalwar: :iconthedigitalwar: :iconthedigitalwar:

:iconmajor-may: requested a tutorial about the grid and skin peel effects after I posted Crocutamon's Season 3 Digivolution. I didn't see any particular reason to say no, especially since it sounds like a lot of other people have also had the idea to make one, but for whatever reason just haven't had the time or motivation to do it. Maybe some of these tricks will help and we'll see some more awesome digivolutions!

I hope it's all clear, but feel free to ask any questions and I'll try to elaborate :) And if you use the tutorial, kindly just credit me and show me your own digivolutions, 'cause I put a lot of work into figuring out this process and I'd love to see what you do!

Well I knew about the "face first and last" requirement, but I never really noticed the whole feet fetish going on there.
Good that I stumbled upon this, now I feel like doing it too!

Lol I watched the digivolution sequences many times in a row...you start to notice patterns after a while when that's all you see :XD:

Glad I can be of service! Good luck with your own Season 3 Digivolution :D

Thanks for making this! I already did one for Arzamon using a mix of season one and two's digivolutions but it didn't turn out very well heh; So I'm going to try it now using season three's and this tutorial will definitely help (especially the breakdown of the scenes you listed). Really, thanks again!

It's not as complicated as it looks...it's more time-consuming than everything else since you have to repeat this process several times for all the screens :XD:

Do you really? Then listen to it on repeat whenever you work on this no arguments.

Lol I use a lot of layers all the time really, I'm just OCD like that >>;

Really the only ones that NEED to stay separated are the lineart, peel lineart, and grid lineart, and you can flatten everything together once you've done the effects too. :)

That was one of my favourite things about season 3, it just looked so awesome. It was a great show, but I do love the old school one as well, I have just started watching through 02 again, and it still pretty good.

Haha, I'm actually watching season 3 now (hence...posting a season 3 digivolution sequence). I'm about 4/5 through it now, but overall I'm just not that fond of it for a variety of reasons, I much prefer classic seasons 1&2. Tamers just changed too much about what I liked about original digimon :XD:

But yeah--the digivolution sequences are badass.

Thanks, I actually already tried to get in but I need to redo the character...They also said my rookie looked like a champion...I figure I can fix that in his description instead of editing the pic, make him say the size of a 12 year old? What you think?

:iconvelkynkarma:
VelkynKarma Featured By Owner Apr 22, 2012  Hobbyist Digital Artist
I'd have to see the digimon to be sure, but it's not necessarily size that indicates a champion. After all, Renamon is the height of an average adult human, and there are several people who have a Renamon as a partner in the group.

Rookies need to be relatively compact, but their designs also have to be pretty simple, too. Their body shapes are fairly straightforward and they shouldn't have too many extras or details. Possibly that was the problem?

Extra details??? 0.0 That is most likely it. Here's the link:[link]
Anything you think I could knock off him then to simplify his design? His tamer is already being redone completely.

Okay, based on what I'm seeing here, I'd change a few things…

First I'd get rid of the Reliability crest in the background, or lower its opacity significantly. It's very distracting and hard to see your digimon with it that bright.

Second, you're going with a raptor, which is fine, but he is very detailed and dangerous-looking, which isn't. Take a look at some other dinosaur digimon:
Agumon: [link]
Guilmon: [link]

Guilmon is about the most detailed a digimon gets as a rookie in the canonical series. Notice how they both have squarish muzzles, stubby, rounded limbs, and equally stubby, rounded claws. Augmon's tail is short and stubby too, and while Guilmon's is long, it's just a tail. Neither one has the streamlined, perfectly created for mass destruction shape that a velociraptor has.

So if you were to pare down your digimon, I'd say, start by removing his forked blade tail and all those additional spikes (if he has any spikes at all, they will be rounded and not particularly dangerous, like on Terriermon. Get rid of most of the stripe details on his sides--if you want to keep the red band markings on his head, arms and tail, that should be fine, since plenty of digimon have a few geometric symbols here and there. Make him proportionally shorter, make his head and limbs and body stubbier and rounder, and generally give him an overall much friendlier appearance. He could probably still have the toe-claws, but at this stage they won't be SUPER dangerous.

Remember, Rookies are called Rookies for a reason—'cause they really are rookies to the fighting game and still aren't awesome at it :XD: In most of the shows the kids have an easier time disguising their rookies as toys or pets because they come across as friendly enough to do so, but at present moment I wouldn't go near your Rookie with a twenty-foot pole because even if he ends up kid sized, he looks like he'd eat me.

Lol, Thanks alot that actually helps quite a bit. Though I may need to find a way to dumb down the tail claw instead of removing it completely. I kinda wanted it to be a prevalent feature of his Rookie thru Mega forms. I think I can use guilmon as an easy reference point for what I am trying for here. I'll be sure to show ya the final version! ^^ Thanks again!

If you do still want the tail claw, I'd make it just a simple stubby spike or a ridge on the tail or something for now, nothing too detailed. It'll be easy to infer that in his higher forms that's where tail blades or whatever grew from.

I am happy to help, no problem :)
