Name: Kaden
Age: 22
Gender: Male
Species: Hellhound
Job: Mercenary
Statistics

Talents:
:bulletred: Fighting ~ Brawling is what Kaden does best. The strong, aggressive nature of a hellhound suits him well in most forms of combat. He’s been formally trained to use his guan dao by his father. He also does sufficiently in hand to hand, although this is more street brawling than a formal martial arts. He also usually has a knife hidden somewhere on his person just in case, too.

:bulletred: Fire Magic~ Kaden is very proficient at fire magic, although he uses it sparingly due to the aftereffects. Even used in short doses he grows quite exhausted. If forced to use fire magic for a prolonged period of time, he becomes very feverish. As a result he only uses fire magic as a last-ditch effort if he has to protect himself or a client, and even then usually to distract or blind opponents more than as an outright attack.

:bulletred: Sewing ~ A talent Kaden would prefer nobody ever figures out about him. Despite his brutish attitude Kaden is actually quite proficient at sewing and mending, due to having to learn it fast in his past. He patches or mends most of his own clothing after fights, and sometimes modifies things he buys to suit his own personal preferences better. But he’ll deny it vehemently if somebody else catches him at it.

Personality:
Kaden is pretty difficult to deal with if you’re not familiar with him—which is most people. The general populace tends to be put off by his all-encompassing greed and loud, crude, uncultured attitude. He’s rather foul-mouthed (fair warning to anybody who dislikes swearing), snarky and sarcastic, and frequently blunt with his observations even if it ends up being rude or embarrassing. He’s quite confident in himself (frequently more than he should be), and doesn’t particularly care what others think of him for the most part.

He’s not particularly bright, and his first reaction tends to be to swear or attack instead of think things through, which will get him into trouble quite often. Kaden’s okay with getting into fights, though—he loves brawling, sometimes attending bars just for the fights and not the booze, and he loves the thrill of combat. He has absolutely no hesitation fighting dirty if he has to, and no particular code of honor in combat. However if he’s called out on it he will fight cleanly, just to prove he’s still strong and can do it if he has to. (This doesn’t stop him from putting down his opponents who do believe in honor codes...Kaden is very much a believer in ‘it’s a dog eat dog world out there,’ and having been in a number of dangerous no-holds-barred fights before he knows in the ‘real’ world people won’t follow rules, they’ll just kill you).

Kaden will do almost anything for money, as long as the paycheck attached to the job is big. Although he primarily works as a mercenary, and specializes in escorting people or items through dangerous areas, bodyguarding, and supplementing personal guards or militaries, he’ll pretty much do any job as long as the price is right, from helping with construction to...less legal things. His services are a bit expensive, but he’s very good at fighting and protecting people, so people will frequently consider him worth paying for anyway. He usually takes his contracts pretty seriously and can be guaranteed to come through on them once hired, unless the client does something against that contract first.

The sole exception to his unlimited greed is things related to kids. Kaden has a soft spot for children, and oddly enjoys their company (although frequently they are scared of him). He will willingly protect or save a child without needing a bribe of gold or expensive items, and he will flat-out refuse any job that could potentially harm a kid. It’s also the only time he’ll willingly break a contract in the middle of it, if he finds out his job could hurt a kid.

History:
Kaden’s entire family was born in a rather remote region of Alora, not too far from the Alave Forest. Because they lived near a relatively small village near the dangerous forest, they didn’t have much in the way of money or possessions. Life was aways a bit difficult and everyone had to work hard to get enough for food and basic comforts—and even harder when more and more siblings kept arriving.

Still, Kaden has fond memories of those earlier years. Even if they were a bit tough he also enjoyed playing with his siblings, and his family as a whole (despite being a very large family of hellhounds) enjoyed a relatively peaceful life. His father was a former soldier from the Aloran “Talons,” retired after many years of service, and earned them a little income now by working in the village every day doing odd jobs (like fixing houses or helping others on their farms as a hired hand). His mother was mostly unemployed, but in between taking care of the home she would sometimes sew things to sell (clothing or toys, etc) which occasionally could earn a little gold. (Kaden learned some of his current sewing skills by watching her, not that he’ll ever admit it). They were able to live relatively comfortably, if not luxuriously, due to his parents’ income, supplementing their meals with home-grown garden vegetables and hunting at the edge of the woods in order to get by.

Kaden even had the opportunity to be formally trained in combat with a guan dao by his father and enjoyed the lessons immensely, being the most aggressive and combat-oriented member of the family (his father had hopes of Kaden joining the military one day, thus the training). It is also during this time that he discovers he is proficient in fire magic—rather uncomfortably. His initial attempts are exhausting, but being a kid and more than a little rash, he keeps pushing himself to see just how much he can do. He’s able to produce some spectacular fireballs and dangerous fiery traps, but the end result leaves him feverish and sickly for over a week, and very terrified that he’s dying. In the end he learns the hard way to only use his magic when necessary.

Unfortunately, barely a year after the birth of his youngest sibling, things started to go sour. An illness goes through the entire village, and Kaden’s family unfortunately catches it as well. It lasts several weeks, is extremely painful, and takes a number of lives all throughout the village—including Kaden’s youngest sibling, as well as his mother and father, who aren’t as young and healthy as their children. Kaden is fourteen at the time, and his siblings range from eighteen to three years of age.

From there, things become difficult pretty fast as the family struggles to support itself without their parents. Without the income of their father or mother, they have difficulties getting enough of the basics, especially for such a big family. Most of the younger siblings can’t help much either, leaving the majority of the care-taking jobs to Kaden and his two older siblings (16 and 18). They manage to scrape by just barely, with Kaden’s older brother hunting constantly for food and his older sister watching the younger siblings and trying to attend to their vegetable gardens at the same time. It’s not a particularly happy time of the family’s life, and they struggle for almost two years to get by.

Kaden does his best to help for the entire two years, but he’s sick of being useless and poor. He only ever seems to cause trouble for his family by getting into fights down at the village when people insult them, he’s not really any good at looking after his siblings, he’s terrible at growing food, and he never had a chance to learn to hunt from his father (nor can his older brother teach him now, there’s no time to spare). The few things he is good at, like getting into scraps and winning, are useless for his family and causes them trouble more than helps them. He starts realizing he’s ultimately just another mouth to feed while being unable to contribute.

So when he’s sixteen he leaves, taking his father’s prized guan dao with him. He decides if he’s just a waste of space and nothing but trouble for his family, he’ll leave them alone, and find a way to be useful elsewhere. Using the combat training his father gave him, he starts hiring himself out as a mercenary to make gold fast and earn a name for himself. His first few attempts are pretty dangerous for himself, and he nearly gets himself killed several times, but over time he develops a real feel for combat and an even stronger fighting instinct than before.

Now, six years later, Kaden has honed his combat skills to perfection. It’s definitely the one thing he’s incredibly good at, and he uses those skills to earn himself tons of gold and break away from that life of poverty. However he hasn’t forgotten his family or his reason for leaving in the first place, and regularly sends the majority of his earnings back to them to keep them fed, clothed and cared for.

Additional Info:

View on the Gods:
The four gods obviously exist, so Kaden does believe in them. However, he’s extremely skeptical of and wary around them in general. They have a lot of power at their disposal but they seem like regular people, and he knows regular people with power are dangerous, so he doesn’t entirely trust them.

His distrust of the gods could also stem from his past. Kaden assumes that gods are there to take care of their people, but none of them came to take care of his family when they were sick, or to help his siblings when they were struggling to eat. He doesn’t believe they deserve all the praise they get, and believes in making his own way, without asking them for help in anything. He feels this way particularly for Ayre, the god of his home region, although it should be noted he’s never spoken to the god and only saw him from afar once in Auric City.

As a result he goes out of his way to avoid them and their followers. Although Kaden likes to pick fights, he’ll notably keep from antagonizing anyone in the four gods’ employ, and keep well away from them. He also refuses to accept their charity now—he’d rather sleep in a ditch in the pouring rain than accept a room in the Summer Temple for the night, for example. He just wants nothing to do with them.

Random Facts:
:bulletyellow: He is extremely vain about his horns. He polishes and cleans them constantly and is always decorating them with something. The tip of one horn broke off in a fight and since then he’s been extremely self-conscious about it.

:bulletyellow: The beads and adornments for his horns look expensive, but are actually just made of clay and such. Some of his younger siblings made them. Especially important to him is the simple-looking little charm he always keeps tied to one horn, which was given to him by his family when he left and is supposed to keep him safe.

:bulletyellow: He has six siblings altogether. Two are older than him: Marrok, 26-year-old brother, and Sylva, 24-year-old sister. Four are younger than him: Halvar (brother) 17 years, Aeronwy (sister) 15 years, Valdis (sister) 13 years, and Midir (brother) 11 years.

:bulletyellow: Although he sends a lot of money home every month to his family, he keeps them relatively uninformed about how he earns it, figuring they’d be very disappointed by some of his shadier dealings. He doesn’t want them to reject the money, so he just doesn’t tell them where it comes from.

:bulletyellow: He can read but isn’t particularly good at it.

:bulletyellow: Like a hound, his sense of smell is a little above average (but not unnaturally so, or in a way that requires magic).

:bulletyellow: Although he’s extremely greedy and will sell almost anything to make some gold, he refuses to sell his guan dao even though it’s actually worth quite a bit. This is because it’s his father’s, so it has sentimental value as well as a monetary one.

:bulletyellow: He’d like to visit the City of the Dead one day to pay respects to his dead parents and younger sibling. Unfortunately, due to hating water and boats, he’s yet to figure out how to get there.

Dislikes:
:bulletblue: Cold and cold weather (probably the result of living in Alora)
:bulletblue: Cowards
:bulletblue: Anything that tastes sour
:bulletblue: Being insulted to his face. This usually leads to him attacking.
:bulletblue: Pity, he can’t stand being pitied
:bulletblue: People who are smarter than him...or rub in that they’re smarter than him.
:bulletblue: Water—it’s a major fear of his, since he can’t swim and as a fire-based hellhound he’s opposed to water. He’ll get close enough to fish for supper or cross a bridge, but he hates boats and only submerges in water to bathe.
